John Wayne Airport Posts August 2022 Statistics

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport increased in August 2022 as compared to August 2021. In August 2022, the Airport served 1,030,933 passengers, an increase of 24.0% when compared with the August 2021 passenger traffic count of 831,522.

  • Compared to 266,986 passengers in August 2020, there was an increase of 286.1%.
  • Compared to 942,385 passengers in August 2019, there was an increase of 9.4%.

Commercial aircraft operations in August 2022 of 8,369 increased 14.6% and commuter aircraft operations of 448 decreased 13.8% when comparing with August 2021 levels. 

  • Compared to 2020 levels of commercial aircraft operations, there was an increase of 117.3% and commuter aircraft operations decreased 18.2%.
  • Compared to 2019 levels of commercial aircraft operations there was an increase of 8.4% and commuter aircraft operations decreased 17.8%.

Total aircraft operations decreased in August 2022 as compared with the same month in 2021. In August 2022, there were 28,857 total aircraft operations (takeoffs and landings) a 3.2% decrease compared to 29,814 total aircraft operations in August 2021.

  • Compared to August 2020 of 22,963, total aircraft operations increased 25.7%.
  • Compared to August 2019 of 29,921, total aircraft operations decreased 3.6%.

General aviation activity of 20,022 accounted for 69.4% of the total aircraft operations during August 2022, and decreased 8.8% compared with August 2021.

  • Compared to August 2020 general aviation activity of 18,540, which accounted for 80.7% of total aircraft operations, operations increased 8.0%.
  • Compared to August 2019, general aviation activity of 21,520, which accounted for 71.9% of total aircraft operations, operations decreased 7.0%.

The top three airlines in August 2022 based on passenger count were Southwest Airlines (372,157), United Airlines (161,387) and American Airlines (146,429).
