John Wayne Airport Posts May 2021 Statistics

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport increased in May 2021 as compared to May 2020. In May 2021, the Airport served 585,735 passengers, an increase of 611.4% when compared with the May 2020 passenger traffic count of 82,341, and a decrease of 37.9% when compared to May 2019 of 942,872 passengers.

Commercial aircraft operations increased 223.0% and commuter aircraft operations increased 262.7% when compared with May 2020 levels. Comparing May 2021 to 2019 levels, commercial aircraft operations of 7,926 decreased 29% and commuter aircraft operations of 500 decreased 2.8%.

Total aircraft operations increased in May 2021 as compared with the same month in 2020. In May 2021, there were 27,591 total aircraft operations (take-offs and landings), a 59.0% increase compared to 17,352 total aircraft operations in May 2020, and increased 4.1% compared to May 2019 of 26,509 total aircraft operations.

General aviation activity, which accounted for 77.6% of the total aircraft operations during May 2021, increased 39.2% when compared with May 2020, and increased 19% when compared to general aviation activity of 18,000 in May 2019, which accounted for 67.9% of total aircraft operations.

The top three airlines in May 2021 based on passenger count were Southwest Airlines (235,802), American Airlines (121,249) and Alaska Airlines (76,385).
