“CLEAN DIRT” ON DISPLAY AT JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT
SANTA ANA, Calif. – “Clay is clean dirt and I love to play in it,” states Connie Major, the featured ceramic artist for the John Wayne Airport Community Space from May 21, 2018 – June 14, 2018. Her unique pieces may be viewed on the Departure (upper) Level near security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C, and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4.
“Ms. Major creates art that is beautiful and skillfully engineered, with amusing design and color,” said Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairman Andrew Do. “I encourage Airport guests to seek out and enjoy this art installation when visiting the Airport.”
Connie Major has been working with clay since she created her clay three-member snail family in fourth grade. While the snail family, or the 8-inch curled up cat, from junior high, won’t be on display at John Wayne Airport, her works for this exhibition explore life’s topics with the intent to draw in the viewer, and have them think about what they are seeing. An interesting aspect of her exhibition is that fourteen of the twenty-three pieces were created in 2017 and 2018.
Ms. Major earned her Bachelor of Arts in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from California State University Long Beach in 1974. While raising her family, her affinity for ceramics continued as she took classes when time permitted at Santa Ana College; she became serious about ceramics in 2003 and remains passionate about her work. Her pieces may purposely have a hidden laugh or second deeper interpretation. Major doesn’t have a particular procedure, technique, or approach and she often makes tools to achieve a desired effect, with each project having its own distinct method and goals.

John Wayne Airport and Ms. Major look forward to guest feedback on this installation, as guests look twice or ponder the interpretation and meaning.
