Guided tours of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal are available free of charge, parking not included. Tours typically begin at the John Wayne statue on the Arrival (lower) Level, located between Terminals A and B. Groups will have an opportunity to learn about the history of John Wayne Airport, view Terminal architecture, rental car areas, baggage carousels, airline ticket counter areas, security checkpoints, flight display monitors, paging and skycap activity. For security purposes, tour groups are not permitted beyond security checkpoints, the Control Tower, or Fire Station.
The highlight of the tour concludes with a visit to the top of Parking Structure A1, where airfield activity and take-off or landing of planes can be seen.
Children on tours will receive a JWA Fun Guide, which includes coloring pages, a word search, a maze, connect-the-dots, a crossword puzzle, a “Pilot’s Alphabet,” a paper airplane cut-out and other interesting and educational activities. The JWA Fun Guide can also be downloaded from our website at: http://www.ocair.com/aboutjwa/volunteers/tourprogram.
Tours are scheduled two or more weeks in advance and are offered at non-peak traffic hours, usually 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday tours may also be arranged. The tour lasts between 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
Volunteer tour guides, including private pilots, teachers, executives and Airport employees, donate their time to support this important program. Volunteers bring their unique expertise and tremendous energy to each and every tour.
Tours are conducted with a minimum of seven and no more than 25 participants, including chaperones. Groups larger than 25 people (maximum 50 people) will be divided into two groups and will tour simultaneously. Children must be at least 5-years old, and/or in first grade, and must be accompanied by an appropriate number of adult chaperones. High school and college tours may be arranged featuring aviation career speakers. Adult groups are also welcome to arrange a tour.
