Air Cargo FacilityIn 2008, nearly 17,000 tons of air cargo were moved through John Wayne Airport. Although not generally visible to JWA’s commercial passengers, FedEx and UPS conduct their operations from an area south of the Riley Terminal complex, near what used to be Tallman Road. Because that location is needed for construction of the new Parking Structure C, the Airport recently relocated the cargo facilities to an area south of Parking Lot C, directly across from the taxi staging area near Campus Drive.
This project, overseen by Swinerton Builders and Barnhart Inc., included the relocation of modular buildings that house FedEx and UPS operations as well as vehicle parking, communications utilities, water and power, and even the creation of a new traffic signal at the new air cargo entrance. The relocation was successfully completed in early December, just in time for the busy holiday shipping season!
