John Wayne Airport Recognized for Water Conservation Efforts

John Wayne Airport (JWA) was recently recognized by the Mesa Consolidated Water District Board of Directors for making conscientious efforts to save water, reduce runoff and protect the environment throughout daily operations. JWA has more than 500 acres of land, serves millions of travelers annually and is one of Mesa Water's largest customers.

The Mesa Water Board called John Wayne Airport an "example of Mesa Water customers harnessing technology to maximize the County's water resources."

JWA has taken many steps to reduce its water use, including:

  • Utilization of ultra-low-flow toilets and urinals, and automatic faucets and flushing sensors in its Riley Terminal restrooms;

  • Monitoring of the Airport's irrigation system for more efficient landscape watering;

  • Diverting Airport construction runoff to an on-site retaining basin to increase groundwater percolation into local aquifers; and

  • Strictly enforcing the airport-wide Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan.
