JWA Celebrates 25 Years of Student Art Contests
In December 2014, John Wayne Airport (JWA) hosted its 25th annual Student Art Contest. This year’s theme, “OC 125: Exploring Orange County’s Story,” was selected in commemoration of the County’s quasquicentennial, or its 125th anniversary in 2014.
Entries are submitted from public and private schools throughout Orange County in grades Kindergarten through 12. A panel of judges, comprised of Orange County art professionals, judge and select the winning artwork, currently on exhibit now through March 6, 2015, on the Arrival (lower) Level of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal, adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4.
The competition, held each year in December, began with the opening of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal in 1990 and has been affiliated with the International Aviation Art Contest (IAAC) since 1996. The National Aeronautic Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration, in cooperation with the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, sponsor the contest. Because this year’s JWA Student Art Contest commemorated Orange County’s 125th anniversary, it was not affiliated with the IAAC. Thousands of students have participated over the last 25 years, and many JWA participants have gone on to win at State, National and International levels of competition.
At the opening of each year’s exhibition, an awards and recognition ceremony is held in the Riley Terminal. Over 200 parents, teachers and students attend, and prizes are generously donated to the students in each grade for First, Second, Third Place and Honorable Mention by: Boomers!, Build-A-Bear Workshop World Bearquarters, Disneyland Resort, Go Kart World, JWA McDonald’s, K1 Speed Inc., Knott’s Berry Farm, Laguna College of Art and Design, LEGOLAND California Resort, Los Angeles Lakers, Orange County Department of Education, Orange County Public Library, Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, South Coast Plaza, Southwest Airlines, The Children’s Museum at La Habra and The Irvine Museum. We couldn’t host this wonderful competition without the generous support of our sponsors.
Next time you visit JWA, stop by Baggage Claim in Riley Terminal A or B and enjoy their tremendous talent!
