SANTA ANA, CA – John Wayne Airport (JWA) has recognized 27 Orange County students for their winning entries in the 2004-2005 International Aviation Art Contest, themed “More than 100 Years of Human Flight.” Some of the entries from JWA’s annual contest are subsequently entered in state, national, and international aviation art competitions. In last year’s competition, one student, Ellen Webre of Irvine, Calif., received state and national honors and was ultimately recognized at the international level of the competition in Paris.
Participating students enter their works in age-based divisions. In Category I (ages 6-9) all winners hailed from the city of Irvine: eight-year old Carol Sun, first place; nine-year old Julia Hung, second place; and six-year old Emily Jin, third place. In Category II (ages 10-13) there were two winners: 10-year old Ellen Webre of Irvine, first place; and 11-year old Jenny Chen of Tustin, second place. In Category III (ages 14-17) winners were 16-year old Vohn Tran of Huntington Beach, first place; and 14-year old Shaadee Ahmadnia of Anaheim Hills, second place. A full list of winners, including those receiving honorable mention, is attached. (View list of winners)
“Each year, the Airport’s Art Contest generates thousands of entries from talented students,” said Airport Director Alan Murphy. “We’re delighted to provide an opportunity for these young artists to learn about aviation and we share their excitement when their creativity and hard work are honored in Orange County and at other levels of the competition.”
The 16th Annual JWA Student Art Contest is now underway. Themed “Air Sports and Nature in Harmony,” entries must be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. November 10, 2005. Rules for entry and more information about the contest can be obtained on the JWA Web site at http://www.ocair.com/terminal/studentart/flyer.htm.
JWA implemented its Annual Student Art Contest in 1990 as part of the opening of the Thomas F. Riley terminal. In 1996, the Airport began coordinating its art contest with the International Aviation Art Contest sponsored by the National Aeronautic Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, in cooperation with the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
Since its inception in 1989, the Airport Arts Program has presented a series of museum quality exhibitions in the Vi Smith Concourse Gallery and featured numerous Orange County artists through the Community Focus Space program.
