Historic Exhibition opens at John Wayne Airport

O.B. Schooley, Director of John Wayne Airport is proud to announce the arrival of the Airport’s newest exhibition, "Building for Air Travel: Architecture and Design for Commercial Aviation."

The exhibition, the first of its kind organized by an art museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, takes an in-depth look at the history and the current state of architecture and design for commercial aviation. More than seven decades of commercial air transport are featured in this photo exhibition from 12-seater propeller-driven planes in the 1920’s barely making 100 miles per hour, to today’s massive 747’s carrying 450 passengers at speeds more than 500 m.p.h. The traveling exhibition features two Orange County sites: the Thomas F. Riley Terminal and the historic wooden hangars at the Tustin Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station.

Air travelers and the community at large are invited to view this spectacular exhibition which is on display through April 26, 1998 and is located on the Departure Level of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal opposite Gates 1 - 4 and 11 – 14, at each security checkpoint and Baggage Claim 1 and 2 on the Arrival Level.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, United Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines and the Benefactors of Architecture at the Art Institute.
