Santa
Ana, CA – For many, June signifies the start of summer with vacation
plans and trips to the beach. So as summer weather heats up, so have
passenger levels at John Wayne Airport. June saw a record 823,290 passengers
come through
the Airport, an increase of 10.5% when compared to June 2003’s passenger
traffic count of 745,140.
“Summer is always our busiest time of the year,” said John Wayne Airport Director
Alan Murphy. “June is just the beginning, as we expect July and August to even
be busier as travelers continue to getaway for their summer vacations.”
In anticipation of heavy passenger loads this summer, John Wayne Airport
recently opened new security checkpoints at the airport to speed passenger
and carry-on
baggage screening, and constructed a new temporary modular terminal facility
to help add additional passenger space. “These additions have provided a marked
benefit to our passengers by reducing their wait times going through security
and providing more breathing room as they board their flights,” noted Murphy.
Total aircraft operations at the Airport increased this June with a total of
29,344 take offs and landings -- an increase of 1.1% from the same time last
year. Commercial Carrier flight operations also showed an increase of 9%.
Increased
passenger levels are a product of the new capacity allocations set forth in
a recent Modified Settlement Agreement between the County of Orange,
the City of Newport Beach, and two community groups. The Modified Settlement
Agreement, which went into effect on January 1, 2003, raised the airport’s
passenger cap from 8.4 million annual passengers (MAP) to 10.3 million. John
Wayne Airport is a self-supporting enterprise, owned and operated by the
County of Orange.
