Airside Dock Access Ramp and North Trash Compactor Facility
BACKGROUND
Airside Dock Access
The Airside Dock Access Ramp and North Trash Compactor Facility are “enabling projects” within the Airport Improvement Program. Enabling projects are those that must be complete prior to construction of Terminal C and Parking Structure C primarily because their current location is in the way of the new terminal and/or parking structure. The existing trash access and compacting facilities are located at the south end of Terminal B and must be moved to accommodate Terminal C construction.
The completion of the Airside Dock Access Ramp allowed for continued access to the Terminal B basement loading dock for trash removal services. The new Airside Dock Access Ramp is pictured below.
North Trash Compactor Facility
A new facility was constructed at the north end of the John Wayne Airport airfield, along the fence line that runs parallel to the I-405 Freeway, and adjacent to Parking Structure A1. The North Trash Compaction Facility replaces the landside trash compaction center previously located at the south end of the airfield. TIMELINE
Construction of the Airside Dock Access Ramp and the North Trash Compactor Facility was completed in August 2009.
BUDGET
The Airside Dock Access Ramp and North Trash Compactor Facility projects were budgeted to cost $3.3 million. The projects were ultimately completed for approximately $2 million. The project was funded by Airport revenues, General Airport Revenue Bonds, Passenger Facility Charge revenues and Federal grant funding.

The Airport Improvement Program includes construction of a new South Remain-Over-Night (RON) aircraft parking area, a new multi-level Terminal C with six new commercial passenger gates, new security checkpoints, new commuter facilities as well as new Parking Structure C and a Central Utility Plant.
