LOCAL ARTISTS' MAP COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION ON DISPLAY AT JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A selection of multi-media artwork by Southern California natives Joella March, Stephen Anderson and Lisa Popp is now on exhibit in the Thomas F. Riley Terminal as part of John Wayne Airport's Community Focus Space Program.  Titled the "MAP Collective" exhibition (an acronym made up of the first initial of their last names), the artists' sculptures, photos and drawings can be seen on the Departure (upper) Level near the security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4 from now through September 19, 2014.

Maps and texts shift between palette and canvas, as Joella March reflects on aspects of travel and wanderlust.  In her "conText banner" series, she integrates maps of all kinds with the original poetry she wrote about various themes of flight.  Stephen Anderson's selection depicts his fascination with bird migration.  His material-inspired work celebrates and combines the journeys of both birds and humans, as we co-exist on this planet. In Lisa Popp's series of ceramic assemblages, the solidity of stone meets the translucency of mylar in an animated interplay of shapes and colors; the effect is both monumental and intimate as one of the oldest mediums dances with one of the newest.

Joella March is an artist and art educator.  As an administrative and advisory board member of the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA), she focuses on grant writing, program development and community arts outreach.  She is also the Co-founder and Director of "The Art of Daybreak" Multi-Arts Outreach Program.  "The 'MAP Collective' exhibition at John Wayne Airport sparked a new creative direction for my art practice.  As I explored this new territory of map as artistic media I was inspired by concepts of time and distance, travel, romance and communication," said March.

Stephen Anderson is serving his fourth year as Executive Director of the OCCCA and is a past member and former President of Southern California Artists (SCA).  "The work I created for this exhibit is entirely new and made with the idea of showing in a public space: John Wayne Airport.  This project opened me up to new directions and ideas in approach and creation of the artwork that otherwise would not manifest," said Anderson.

Lisa Popp, an Orange County native, received her Master of Fine Art degree in Visual Art/Clay and Sculpture in 2009 from Marywood University, Scranton, PA.  Lisa continues her journey juxtaposing clay and other materials creating custom panels for residential and commercial interiors. Popp's contribution to the MAP Collective includes a series of aerial topographical reflections of selected locations from memories captured while travelling throughout the United States.
