David Hockney and many more

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A collection of over 190 portraits of one subject by internationally renowned contemporary artists is now on exhibit at John Wayne Airport through January 2014. The subject for these varied works of art is Joan Quinn, a friend of the artists and a patroness of the arts. The collection is being exhibited in the Vi Smith Concourse Gallery in Terminal A across from Gates 2 through 5, in Terminal C across from Gates 18 through 21 and in the free-standing display cases across from Gate 14. The exhibition is available for viewing by ticketed passengers.

The exhibition features artworks on loan from the private collection of Los Angeles art collectors Jack and Joan Quinn. J. Cheryl Bookout was the curator and Amanda Quinn Olivar served as a curatorial advisor. The portrait titled: "By a tree, by her pool," is an example of one interpretation of Joan as seen by fashion photographer Helmut Newton.

The works in this exhibit are as varied as the artists themselves. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Helmut Newton focus on the expressiveness of hands, or body adornments. Robert Graham provides a small set of bronze casts. Chuck Arnoldi fashions tree twigs and wood. Ed Moses enhances portrait photographs with paint. Also included is one of the newest additions to the Quinn’s collection by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry.

"This exhibit offers a rare opportunity to see the diverse styles of some of the most prominent names in contemporary art and how they approach one subject over the course of several decades," says guest-curator J. Cheryl Bookout. "The result is a comprehensive study in portraiture. Joan Quinn's wide-ranging activities in the arts have created a continuum of portraits by many artists. A glimpse into the extraordinary timeline of the artists' careers and friendships with Joan and her husband Jack is layered into the art."

Joan Agajanian Quinn is a second generation Angeleno. After several years as a master teacher, she was appointed the West Coast Editor of Interview magazine by Andy Warhol, and served as Society Editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. Quinn, the longest sitting member appointed to the California Arts Council, served two terms each on the Beverly Hills Arts Commission, the Beverly Hills Architectural Commission and the California Film Commission. She is a primary non-governmental delegate to the United Nations where she represents the Armenian International Women's Association (AIWA).
