Passenger Boarding Bridges

As part of John Wayne Airport’s ongoing effort to maintain and replace equipment throughout the Terminal Complex, new passenger boarding bridges were installed at all 14 gates in Terminals A and B to replace the original boarding bridges that have been used by millions of passengers for nearly 20 years. The new, fully enclosed and carpeted bridges, through which passengers walk from the Terminal onto the aircraft, will match the boarding bridges that will be installed at six new gates in Terminal C, which is scheduled to open in late 2011.

Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS)

The CUPPS project is a centralized computer system, consisting of hardware, software, network equipment and infrastructure that allow the airlines to log-in to their computer systems at any gate or ticketing position in the terminal rather than the limited, exclusive airline locations. This type of system also allows JWA to use the airport space more efficiently by shifting airline gate and ticketing assignments based on the existing needs. Self-service kiosks, which provide computerized ticketing and boarding services to JWA patrons, will be located throughout the terminals.

Benefits
  • Flexibility for airlines to use common computer system equipment throughout the terminals to ensure efficient processing of passengers.
  • Efficiency for passengers to access self-service kiosks for ticket and boarding, expediting their trip through the Airport.

In Terminals A and B, the CUPPS project also includes the renovation of the cabinetry and millwork at the gates and ticketing locations by removing existing and installing new cabinetry and millwork in the same locations, together with related floor and finish repairs and electrical work.

Airside Dock Access and North Trash Compactor

A new facility was constructed at the north end of the airfield, along the fence line that runs parallel to the 405 freeway. This facility, also known as the north trash compaction center, replaces the landside trash compaction center previously located at the south end of the airfield. The relocation of the trash facility was required in order to close down the south trash facility, which was situated on the site of the new Parking Structure C.
